2017 Hubris Pinot Noir

Hubris is a collaboration between winemaker Robert Drew and Timothy Patermann. A lifelong involvement in the hospitality industry motivated Tim to create a confident Tasmanian wine that resonates with appreciators of small vintage, cool climate Pinot. This is a single vineyard Pinot Noir, made on the farm at Tea Tree in the Coal River Valley. The fruit was sourced from the old Third Child Vineyard on the Golden Slope at Tea Tree, right next door. The vineyard was sold in 2017 and is now known as Merriworth Wines. We have long been big fans of the wines made by the owner of the Third Child vineyard, John Skinner. This wine showcases the superb fruit character of the site, and the exceptional 2017 vintage. The wine has a dense, dark blood plum colour, which is a great indication of the richness and concentration evident on the palate. The nose exhibits aromas of flint, clay, rose petals and some stalky, whole bunch character. The palate is all about rich fruit flavours, beautifully supported by lovely bright acidity and carefully judged and well balanced oak influence. Tim tastes logan berry, full fruit flavours with lingering back palate spiciness, acid and mild tannins from the whole bunches. A hint of licorice and balanced but subtle oak. We gave this wine a top of the class drink-ability rating of 5/5.

2017 Brinktop Killara Pinot Noir

Gill and Todd Goebel have been growing grapes and making wine in the Coal River Valley, Tasmania, since 1999. They are guided by sustainability and a passion for Tasmania and the wines that can be produced on the southern island state of Australia with its true cool climate. Brinktop is their second venture, started when they purchased an old farm called Killara located between the village of Richmond and Sorell. The old farm proved to be a hidden gem. It has a long ridge affording gentle, east-north-east facing slopes and perfect dolerite soils that had been used for sheep grazing for the prevoius 100 years. Good organic matter and all the trace elements were in place naturally. The slopes are cooled each afternoon during the growing season by the sea breezes straight off nearby Frederick Henry Bay. Eight hectares are now planted out mainly to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay leaving a hectare each for Tempranillo and Shiraz. Brinktop wine is made by Todd at the onsite winery. The Brinktop Killara is the premium Pinot Noir in the Brinktop range, made from grapes grown on 30 year old vines in the Coal River Valley, Tasmania. The excellent quality of the fruit used shows in this wine. Structure, depth and a silky smooth mouth feel are complimented with layers of flavour. Red berry fruits are pronounced and followed with mushroom and spice. The wine was made using partial wild ferment, some whole bunch and matured in French oak (75% new) for 16 months. Wine maker: Todd Goebel
