Ghost Rock SV Iris 2023 Pinot Noir $70
Planted in 2015, the Iris vineyard sits across the road from the winery and its original plantings. It is one of the windiest, most exposed sites on the property. The wind forces the berries to produce thicker skins as a defence mechanism, this creating deep coloured wines with excellent structure and age potential. Iris has been producing Pinot Noir of incredible power and concentration over the last few seasons, but during our blind classifications of the 2023 wines, this batch stood out amongst its peers as one of the best, thus launching it into Single Vineyard status for the very first time. Viticulture The 2023 growing season got off to a later start, with cool and mild weather in the beginning of the year. February turned up the heat, with warm and dry idealistic growing conditions to bring our fruit to optimal ripeness and flavour intensity. Notes This wine is a single clonal selection, from the 777 clone which performs exceptionally well on our site. The grapes were de-stemmed and allowed to ferment spontaneously. Once fermenting, it was plunged twice daily until dry, when it was pressed and sent to a barrel section with 35% new French oak. Malolactic fermentation completed at the start of Spring. The wine was racked and blended and sent down to oak again for further integration and ageing. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Tasting Notes Aroma Blood plum, dried cranberry, dehydrated raspberry. Slight notes of tea leaves and leather. Rich spices such as bay leaf and clove. Palate Distinguished by its structure, this wine also has incredible balance of tannin , acid and a plush mouthfeel. Invercarron 2023 Pinot Noir $45
The Jones Family received their first parcel of land in the Jordan Valley in 1818. Although the physical location has since changed, the Jones family have maintained their farming origins and, six generations later, are still successfully farming the region. Invercarron is now owned & farmed by Andrew and Karen Jones. We are located in Broadmarsh, a hidden gem located in the Jordan Valley, only a 45 minute drive from Hobart. Being the first vineyard in the region has its challenges, however our location is what makes us unique. The site for the vines was selected after a search of the property, settling on a north-facing block perched high above the valley. The site provides panoramic views of the region, you can see the sheep grazing, the tractor ploughing the fields – all while standing amongst the vines of Invercarron Vineyard. It’s a very unique office. After many soil tests, family discussions and research, the first vines were planted in 2017. Three generations of the Jones’s rolled up their sleeves to chip in and help out. We decided to plant Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines, due to the pristine cool-climate growing conditions in Southern Tasmania. Fast forward to now, and we are just about to bottle our second vintage. Out first vintage exceeded all expectations, with our Pinot Noir achieving a score of 93/100 from Huon Hooke. Being introduced to the wine world has been a steep learning curve, for all of us, but we are committed to putting The Jordan Valley on the map. Like our pioneering ancestors, Invercarron Wines is breaking new ground in the Jordan Valley to ensure the Jones legacy remains for many generations to come. 2023 INVERCARRON PINOT NOIR TASTING NOTES by winemaker Justin Arnold at Ghost Rock winery. Using multiple clones, from a single site location, harvested in late April the ’23 Pinot Noir is crafted with elegance and purity at its heart, brilliantly aromatic. Deep dark red-purple colour, the first mouthful reveals fruits punctuated by red currants, florals, and forest spice. Its medium bodied with impeccable structure. A rich pinot noir that drinks very well now, and will pair well with food at this stage of its life. The balance and structure should see this wine continue to develop in the cellar through to 2030.
