People Madly Stomping 2017 Pinot Noir $22
Marcus Hill Vineyard on the Bellarine Peninsula grows low yielding premium quality grapes which are carefully hand picked before having the living daylights stomped out of them by a band of enthusiastic mates. The wine has a complex array of cherry, violet and spiced notes, good tannic structure and a long finnish. The wine is very skillfully made by Richard Harrison, a fabulous fella and a real Aussie character . We think this is the best Pinot Noir under $25 in Australia, it runs rings around other wines at this price.
Curlewis 2013 Reserve Pinot Noir $70
This 2013 Reserve bottling has been crafted from a section of the 31 year old estate vineyard which traditionally produces the smallest grapes, lowest yields and best canopy conditions. Winemakers Rainer Breit and Stefano Marasco have employed the full bag of Pinot Noir wine-making techniques in the production of this wine. Cold soaking, hot-fermentation, post-ferment maceration, wild yeast use and prolonged lees contact have delivered a wine with layer upon layer of flavour and complexity. The wine has a beautiful deep crimson colour, with a complex and fragrant mix of red berries, exotic spices and earthy aromas. The palate has concentrated dark red fruit flavours, lovely acid balance, beautifully integrated spicy French oak, and a long savoury, fine tannin finish.
This month we have selected two fabulous wines from the Bellarine Peninsula in Victoria. We visited the region back in March, and we were very impressed with the quality and excellent value for money inherent in so many of the Pinot Noir wines we tasted. This region has been producing quality Pinot Noirs for many years and has some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Australia. We have chosen two quite contrasting wines to showcase the region’s wonderful fruit flavours, and also the excellent wine-making and viticulture skills of the producers. If you get an opportunity, we highly recommend a visit to the Bellarine Peninsula, it is only an hour by car from Melbourne. There are some wonderful people to meet and many excellent cellar doors to visit when you are there. Cheers Patrick
