Vavasour 2020 Pnot Noir $34
REGION The Awatere Valley is a sub-region within Marlborough. It has deep Greywacke soils compacted over millions of years by ancient glaciers. Huge boulders, carried down the Awatere River, are strewn across the valley floor. River shingles, gravels and silts help bind these large rocks. The vineyards are partially protected from the prevailing northwesterly winds by a broad range of mountain peaks. Awatere Valley wines are particularly prized for their intense aromatics, ripe flavours, dynamic textures and concentration. VINEYARD Vavasour’s 85 hectare (196-acre) estate vineyard is located at one of the marquee sites for grapes in the Awatere Valley. The climate here is noteworthy for its wide diurnal temperature swings—an attribute that contributes to strong personality and incredible balance in the wines. The vineyard’s soils are low in fertility and are comprised of stones and pebbles mixed with clay and loam. The rainfall ranges from 279-406 millimeters (11-16 inches) a year, very arid by any measurement. WINEMAKING Our 2019 Pinot features a number of high-quality clones - 667,5, 777, 948,and 115—that have been carefully matched to individual terroirs within our vineyard. To extract optimum colour, flavour and tannin we used traditional, Burgundian hand-plunging techniques during fermentation. Ten months in French oak barriques (15% new) provided additional aromatics, flavours and structure to the wine. WINE NOTES The 2020 Pinot Noir is bright ruby red in colour. The bouquet is bright and lively with aromas of cherries, wild strawberries and plums. The palate is bold and juicy with red cherry and fresh plums forming an intense core with fine grained tannins giving the wine structure and length. Enjoyed beautifully on its own or paired deliciously with mushroom risotto and or with dark chocolate for something sweet. Eden Road 2019 Tumbarumba Pinot Noir $50
Eden Road is an Australian owned winery and estate based in the Canberra District cool climate wine region, only 30 minutes from the centre of Canberra. Our vines are grown across a collection of unique properties comprising different soils and altitudes, with grape varieties best suited to these conditions, to produce wines of varietal purity, finesse and complexity. In 2017 award-winning French winemaker Celine Rousseau joined the family at Eden Road Wines; and since, our winemaking has been re-defined. It is based on world-leading traditional techniques aimed at producing wines that are a pure and sincere expression of their terroir. In 2020 Eden Road became Certified Organic by NASAA (The National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia). Both, our Cullarin vineyard at Lake George (first planted in 1971) and our estate vineyard in Murrumbateman, have been organically managed since 2017. Our on-site operation including vineyard management, wine-making and bottling, ensures our commitment to the consumer and the environment by managing all processes sustainably from vine to bottle. Eden Road 2019 Tumbarmba Pinot Noir: The grapes are sourced from the Maragle vineyard located in the Tumbarumba region, ranging from 430m ASL to 805m ASL. All grown in decomposed volcanic soils with basalt. Vintage The vintage was low in yield due to 2 years of consecutive drought. High concentration of fruit flavours and tannins. Tasting Notes Deep red colour with red hues. Rich cherry and plum notes lead on to a bright crunchy full-bodied structure with lovely silky tannins and length. Winemaking 10% whole bunches are included with the balance de-stemmed for fermentation over the bunches. The alcoholic fermentation was carried out in open fermenters. Following fermentation the grapes were lightly pressed directly to 30% new French oak barriques. The wine was matured for 16 months in French oak, racked from barrels and gently coarse filtered to bottle. No fining. This wine is a careful selection of the best Maragle Pinot Noir barriques. Cellaring: 10 years
