Ghost Rock 2023 Estate Pinot Noir $46
At Ghost Rock we take great pride in two things above all else; the quality of our fruit, and the quality of our portfolio. Our region is ours to explore, and we leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of excellence – from our first wine to our last. COLOUR Medium ruby red. NOSE Highly intense and aromatic nose, with equal parts red fruits and dark fruits. Ripe raspberries, dried cranberry, black cherry, and plum. The hallmark spice bouquet of our region lingers subtly in the background, revealing black pepper, cardamom and nutmeg. PALATE The palate is full-weighted and plush with fruit, soft silky tannins, and a lovely supporting structure. Harvest Date 12th, 18th and 19th April Alcohol 13.9% pH 3.52 Residual Sugar 0.45 g/l Acidity 6.3 g/l Bottling Date 18th December 2023 VINTAGE Our 2023 vintage was much like 2021, with dryer than average summer conditions, ideal ripening temperatures, and evasion of weather events that gripped other regions. Yields were average across the vineyard, with quality and aromatics proving high across all varietals. Fruit reached ideal ripeness with ease and came in swiftly in 3 short weeks across each of our blocks. An easy growing season, drama-free, and producing some of our most aromatic wines yet. VITICULTURE This Pinot Noir was predominantly sourced from our vineyards on the southern side of the road, La Filles and Iris, which have been the same sites producing our single vineyard selections over the past few seasons. 8 clones are represented in this blend, including ones from California, Dijon, Australia, and New Zealand. Vines were leaf plucked and shoot thinned by hand to increase airflow and to promote optimal ripeness. WINEMAKING Fruit was harvested based on clonal ripeness. Ferments were a majority wild fermented, with some batches receiving a cold soak. The vats were plunged by hand twice daily to the point of 1 baume, when they were drained, pressed, and put to barrel for malolactic fermentation. The wines were aged on lees in 35% new French oak. This year we decided to forgo filtration before bottling. The resulting wine is extra flavourful and textural. - Justin Arnold, Winemaker REGION: Cradle Coast, Tasmania
Bream Creek Vineyard 2023 Estate Pinot Noir $50
Bream Creek Vineyard is one of the pioneers of the modern Tasmanian wine industry. Our 7.5ha vineyard at Marion Bay in the south-east of Tasmania was originally planted in 1974, making it one of the oldest commercial vineyards on the island. Fred Peacock purchased the vineyard in 1990 and expanded the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plantings, as well as introducing Sauvignon Blanc. Fred also planted what was arguably the first commercial planting of the rare German grape variety Schönburger in the southern hemisphere. Since 1990 our premium cool climate wine has been rewarded with 61 trophies and more than 1,150 show medals. Tasting Note: Vintage 2023 was similar to Vintage 2022, with a later than usual start. The impact of the La Nina weather pattern resulted in very modest yields, due to the lower bunch and berry sizes. The upside is that this lower quantity has resulted in excellent quality across all wine styles. A delightfully fresh bouquet of flowers, red fruits (cherries, plums, raspberries), cedar and spice. The palate is similarly fresh and lithe, showcasing similar flavours, subtle and integrated tannins and a long finish carrying red fruits, a hint of cocoa and spice.
